Scientists discovered pieces of opal in an Antarctic meteorite. The reason this discovery was significant was that opal is made up of silica (with up to 30% water) in its structure and had never been identified on the surface of an asteroid, until now. So in a nutshell, this discovery demonstrated that meteorites delivered water ice to asteroids early in the history of the solar system.
